Regarding myself
Perry Vásquez is a multi-disciplinary artist living in the US/Mexico border region where he has been active since 1987. His portfolio includes a range of media from painting, to sound and video, and cartography.
Perry’s work embraces the mixture of histories, cultures, and identities that collide at the border. The energy produced by these collisions reveal hidden patterns and connections that fuel his art.
Most recently, his paintings of palm trees reflect an interest in nature as a conduit for ideology. Palms are artifacts of Spanish colonialism, planted to project the look and feel of the Holy Land. HIs paintings address this colonial myth and the idea of the American West as an oasis in the desert.
Perry has a Bachelors degree in Painting and Political Science from Stanford University and an MFA in Painting and Criticism from the University of California San Diego.
